Answers shared with named people
v0.25.0 · Sep 29, 2026
- New
An answer can now be shared with specific people instead of the whole class. Anyone it is shared with gets a notification and an email, and sees a “Shared with you” badge on it — a reminder that a link to it will not open for classmates who are not on the list.
- Improved
If you shared an answer yourself, you can still open it, and so can the moderators. It still goes through review as usual, and the people it is shared with can read it once it has been verified. Its comment thread notes when it was restricted or opened up again, without naming anyone.
- Improved
The Share button now says when a link will only open for some people, so you know before you paste it.

The syllabus, in public
v0.24.0 · Sep 14, 2026
- New
Every MCA paper now has a page on NoteVault, and you do not need an account to read it. The catalogue lists all 73 papers across the four semesters, and every examined theory paper — 50 of them — carries the full unit‑wise syllabus, the contact hours each unit gets, the books it is taught from, and notes on what is actually worth revising.
- New
That is every core paper and every elective across the first three semesters, so whichever electives you picked, your papers are there. The labs, projects and proficiency courses are listed but have no syllabus page — they have no unit‑wise syllabus to publish.
- Improved
Because these pages are public, a search for a paper code can now find NoteVault. The notes themselves stay where they were — behind an account, checked by a moderator — and nothing anybody uploaded has been made public.
- New
Announcements
v0.23.0 · Sep 13, 2026
- New
The things you used to hear second-hand — “the DBMS test moved to the 20th”, “minor project due Friday”, “college closed Monday” — now appear at the top of the library, and on the note page when they are about that paper. Urgent ones come first, and the colour says how loudly it is being said.
- New
You see the ones meant for you: your own semester’s, plus anything posted for everybody. A notice about one paper still reaches everyone in that semester, so nothing is hidden behind a filter you have to think to set.
- Improved
Read one and you can dismiss it, and it stays dismissed on that device. If a moderator later corrects it — a date typed wrong, a room changed — the corrected notice comes back, so a fix is never something you have already waved away.
- New
Moderators post them from the dashboard: a title, optionally some detail, who it is for, and when it should start and stop showing. A notice can be written now and published later, and taking one down is a single reversible button rather than deleting it.
- New
Share your answers to an assignment
v0.22.0 · Sep 10, 2026
- New
You can now share your worked answer to an assignment, and read everyone else’s under the assignment itself. Open an assignment and the answers are listed below it — tap one to read it in place, without losing your place or opening five tabs to compare.
- New
Share yours with the button on the assignment. The scanner comes first, because most answers are photographs of handwriting: photograph the pages, and one PDF goes up. A Google document works too, exactly like any other note.
- Improved
The paper and semester of an answer are taken from the assignment you are answering, so there is nothing to fill in and no way to file it under the wrong paper.
- New
An open answer has its own link. Send “look at question 3 on Priya’s” and it opens exactly there, and the Back button closes it rather than leaving the page.
- Improved
Answers are read on their assignment and stay out of the library, so a class’s worth of them cannot bury the assignment they belong to. Your own are still listed on your account page, and every answer links back to the assignment it answers.
- Improved
Answers are reviewed by a moderator like everything else, and can be commented on, saved and searched by tag the same way. Deleting an assignment now warns you how many shared answers go with it — it is the one delete that takes other people’s work.
- New
Ads, and where they are not
v0.21.0 · Sep 9, 2026
- New
NoteVault now carries a few ads — one in the middle of the browse list, one under a note’s preview, one above the footer, and a pair down the sides on a wide desktop screen. They pay for the server and the storage the notes live on.
- Improved
There are no ads on the sign-in and sign-up screens, none on the offline page, and none anywhere when you have no connection. The side ones need a desktop-width window and are not shown on a phone or a tablet at all. An ad that has nothing to show takes up no space at all rather than leaving a gap.
- New
NoteVault now has a public front page, an About page and a privacy policy — the first pages on the site anyone can read without signing in. The privacy page says exactly what is stored about you, including the activity record and what stays cached on your own device. Signing in still takes you straight to the notes.
- New
Visits are now counted with Google Analytics, so it is possible to see which papers and which pages actually get used. It is never told who you are — no account, no email, no note titles. The privacy page explains it and links to Google’s opt-out.
- New
Changing what a note holds
v0.20.0 · Sep 8, 2026
- New
A moderator can now change what a note holds, from Edit details — an uploaded file can become a Google document, and a document can become a file. The note keeps its id, its comments and everyone’s saved copies, and one that was already verified stays verified.
- Improved
Swapping a file for a document deletes the old file. Swapping the other way leaves the document alone in Google — it was never NoteVault’s to delete. The form says which of the two is about to happen before you save.
- Improved
Which tab a note is filed under, and which document it points at, are now a moderator’s to change rather than the author’s. Both decide what a note is rather than describe it, and both outlast the review that approved it. Authors still correct the paper, semester, date, keywords, link and additional info on their own notes — and can ask in the comments for the rest.
- New
Links inside a linked document
v0.19.1 · Sep 8, 2026
- Fixed
Clicking a link inside a note’s Google document did nothing — a YouTube link, or any other link the author had put in the document, simply would not open. The frame the document sits in was locked down harder than it needed to be, and the click had nowhere to go.
- Fixed
Links you can tap, and text that fits the screen
v0.19.0 · Sep 5, 2026
- New
Links in comments are now clickable and open in a new tab. Only https links become links — anything else stays as plain text you can still select and copy, so a comment can never send you somewhere unencrypted on a single tap.
- Fixed
A pasted link used to run off the side of a comment instead of wrapping onto the next line, pushing the whole page sideways. Fixed for comments, a note’s additional info, a report, and a moderator’s reply to one.
- Fixed
On an iPhone the date fields pushed past the edge of the screen — on the browse filters, on the upload form, and on the activity log. They now fit the width they are given.
- Improved
The labels on a note — the tab it is in, whether it is featured, its status — moved to their own line under the title, on the cards in the library and on the note’s own page. They used to share the line with the title and squeeze it, which was worst on a phone with a long paper name.
- Improved
Note cards in the same row are now the same height, so a row of them lines up instead of ending raggedly.
- Improved
The Question papers tab has been taken out for now. Notes, Reference material and Assignments are unchanged, and anything already filed keeps its place.
- New
File a Google Doc without exporting it
v0.18.0 · Sep 5, 2026
- New
A note can now be a Google document instead of an uploaded file. Paste the link when you upload, and the document is shown on the note’s page — Docs, Sheets, Slides or a file in Drive. It works on any of the four tabs.
- New
Edits you make in Google show up here. There is nothing to export and nothing to re-upload, so a document that is still being written stops going stale the moment you file it.
- Improved
Changing which document a note points at does not send it back for review. A moderator checks it once, when you first file it, and the change is recorded in the note’s thread the same way every other edit is.
- Improved
Share the document as “Anyone with the link — Viewer” before you file it. A moderator who can only see a request-access screen has nothing to review, and the upload page says so before you get that far.
- Improved
A note like this says “Live doc” wherever it appears, and its page says that the contents can change after it was verified. Both are worth knowing: it is the honest difference between this and a PDF, which stays exactly as it was approved.
- Improved
There is no Download on one of these — the document lives in Google, not here — so the button is an “Open in Google Docs” link instead. With no connection the note still opens; only the document itself is missing, and the page says why.
- Improved
Filing a note privately hides the note. It cannot hide the document — that is Google’s own sharing setting, and you have to change it there too. The upload page says this rather than letting you assume otherwise.
- New
Sharing a note, and landing where you meant to
v0.17.0 · Sep 5, 2026
- New
Every note now has a Share button. On a phone it opens the usual share sheet; everywhere else it copies the link. It shares the note’s page rather than the file, so the link keeps working — a link straight to a file stops opening after about an hour.
- New
Sharing a note that is not on the public shelf — one still waiting on a moderator, or one that has been hidden — now says so as you copy it. The link is still worth sending to someone who can already open the note; it just will not work for anyone else.
- Improved
Open a link to a note while you are signed out and you now land on that note once you sign in, instead of at the top of the library with nothing to show for the trip. It works the same if you have to create an account first.
- Fixed
Coming back from a piece of reference material, an assignment or a question paper returns you to that tab. It used to drop you on Notes every time, which meant finding your place again after opening anything that was not a note.
- New
Four tabs over one library
v0.16.0 · Sep 4, 2026
- New
The library now has four tabs — Notes, Reference material, Assignments and Question papers. Everything that already existed is a note, so nothing moved; the other three are places to put the things that were being filed as notes because there was nowhere else.
- New
An assignment can carry a due date, and the Assignments tab can be sorted by “Due soonest” — with anything undated last. A deadline that has passed is still shown, worded in the past: an assignment does not stop existing when its date does.
- Improved
Filed something under the wrong tab? Move it from Edit details. It keeps its comments, its place in the review queue and everyone’s saved copies, which re-uploading it would not — and the change is recorded in the thread like every other edit.
- Improved
Uploading from a tab starts you on that tab, and everything else about uploading is unchanged: same file limits, same scanner, same review by a moderator whichever tab you file under.
- Improved
For moderators, the review queue is still one queue across all four types, so the longest wait is handled first — with tabs to clear one type at a time, and a count on each. The dashboard now shows the library split by tab as well as the total.
- Improved
Featuring is three per paper per tab rather than three per paper, so a paper’s three featured notes can no longer be what stops it featuring its assignment.
- Improved
Your saved list can be filtered by tab too, and it still shows everything by default.
- New
Keywords you pick instead of type
v0.15.0 · Sep 2, 2026
- New
The keywords box now suggests the tags people are already using, with how many notes carry each one. Start typing and pick one; if the tag you want does not exist yet, the last row offers to create it.
- Fixed
Keyword search matches a tag exactly, so a note tagged “joins” was invisible to anyone searching “join”, and one tagged “b-tree” invisible to “btree”. Every slightly different spelling was a note nobody could find again. Choosing from the tags that exist is what fixes that.
- Improved
The keyword filter on the browse page is the same picker, so it can only ask for a tag that will actually match. It searches when you choose a tag rather than as you type — a half-typed word never found anything anyway.
- Improved
Keywords are tidied the way they are stored: lowercased, trimmed, and duplicates dropped. A note carries at most 20, and the box says so instead of quietly losing the rest.
- Improved
The activity log can be filtered to a person by picking them from a list of who is actually in the log, with how many entries each has, instead of typing an address and hoping. Accounts that have since been deleted are still in that list — their history is usually the reason you are looking.
- New
A “Hide my own activity” box on the activity log. Reading the log is itself recorded, so a super admin scrolling it is mostly reading themselves; this is what gets you to everybody else.
- New
A refresh button on the notes page and across the dashboard. Installed to a home screen there is no address bar to reload from, so there was no way to see a note somebody had just put up, or an account that had just signed up, without closing the app and opening it again. Your filters and your place on the page are kept.
- New
Featured notes, and a list of your own
v0.14.0 · Sep 1, 2026
- New
Moderators can feature a note, which puts it at the top of that paper's notes for everyone — the one to read first. Up to three per paper, so being featured still means something.
- New
You can save any note to your own list with the bookmark icon, and find it again under Saved. The list is yours alone: not the people who wrote the notes, not the moderators, and nobody can see what you have saved.
- Improved
Featured notes lead the results whichever order you sort by, and they say so on the card, so their place at the top reads as a recommendation rather than a broken sort.
- New
Crop the pages you scan
v0.13.0 · Sep 1, 2026
- New
Pages you scan with the camera can be cropped. Drag the corners in to cut off the desk, your thumb, or the next page over, and only the part you kept goes into the PDF. Each page is cropped on its own, and you can redo or undo a crop as many times as you like before building the file.
- Improved
Cropping a page makes the rest of it sharper, not just smaller: the same detail budget is now spent on the part of the photo you kept, so a page shot from a distance reads better than it did before.
- New
Notes the platform cannot see
v0.12.0 · Sep 1, 2026
- New
Super admins can file a note privately. A private note is readable by super admins and by whoever wrote it, and by nobody else. Moderators cannot open one, which is why it skips review entirely — nobody could read it in order to review it.
- New
Any note can be hidden or published again from its own page. Publishing sends it to the moderators as a pending note first: it is about to be readable by everyone and nobody has checked it yet.
- New
Private notes are gathered in one place for super admins, under Private notes on the dashboard. They never show up in browse, so this is where they live.
- Improved
A private note says so wherever it appears, and says that sharing the link will not work for anyone else — a link nobody else can open is worth knowing about before you send it.
- Improved
Hiding or publishing a note is written into its comment thread, so the author is told rather than finding out that their note has moved.
- New
Smaller scans
v0.11.1 · Aug 26, 2026
- Improved
Pages you scan with the camera are compressed harder, so a scan is now a fraction of the size it used to be. It used to be shrunk only when it would not fit at all, which left a nine-megabyte PDF alone; now every scan is squeezed. Handwriting and printed text still read cleanly — it is the photo detail around them that goes.
- Improved
A scanned page is never made larger than the photo it came from. A screenshot or a diagram that was already small used to grow on its way into the PDF.
- Improved
Passwords you can recover, and PDFs you can read on a phone
v0.11.0 · Aug 25, 2026
- New
Forgotten your password? The sign-in page can email you a link to choose a new one. The link works once, expires in an hour, and signs you in as soon as you have set the new password.
- New
You can also change your password from your account page, without waiting for an email — the current one is asked for first.
- Fixed
PDFs now show their pages on a phone. They used to be an empty grey box, because phone browsers refuse to display a PDF inside a page; the pages are now drawn one at a time and scroll with everything else. On a computer the browser's own PDF viewer is still used, so text stays selectable and searchable.
- New
Notes can carry a note of their own. “Additional info” is an optional box when you upload — which lectures the file covers, which pages are blurry, whose handwriting it is — and it can be added, edited or removed later from Edit details.
- New
Moderators are notified when somebody signs up and is waiting to be approved, so a new account is not left sitting in the queue unseen.
- New
You are notified the moment a moderator approves your account, instead of signing in again to find out. Signing up now offers to turn notifications on for exactly this reason.
- Improved
Too many sign-in, sign-up or reset attempts in a short window are now turned away for a few minutes, and the message says how long the wait is rather than “try again later”.
- New
Fix a note's details after uploading it
v0.10.0 · Aug 24, 2026
- Fixed
The paper, semester, date, keywords and link on a note can now be corrected after it is uploaded — the wrong paper picked in a hurry no longer means deleting the note and starting again. The author and moderators can both do it, at any status.
- Improved
Editing the details of a verified note leaves it verified. None of these fields is the file that was approved, so nothing goes back into the queue.
- Improved
Every correction is posted into the note's thread, so a change made after verification is visible to everyone reading it rather than silent.
- Fixed
The thread now updates in place when an edit or a file swap adds to it. It used to keep showing the older conversation until the page was reloaded.
- New
“Edited note details” is its own entry in the activity log.
- Fixed
Installing NoteVault
v0.9.0 · Aug 23, 2026
- New
An install button in the footer, on any browser that offers to install apps. NoteVault then opens in its own window and keeps working offline for notes you have already read.
- Fixed
The security policy now works out the API's address from the build, so the service worker and the app's own requests are no longer blocked when the API sits behind the same domain.
- New
Scan pages with your camera
v0.8.0 · Aug 23, 2026
- New
Photos of a notebook can be turned into a single PDF on the device — add pages, reorder them, drop the blurred one, then upload one file. Nothing is sent anywhere while you build it.
- Improved
Scanned pages are re-encoded until the PDF fits the 10 MB limit, so a stack of phone photos does not bounce off the upload.
- New
A companion link on a note
v0.7.0 · Aug 22, 2026
- New
A note can carry one link — the lecture recording, the textbook chapter, the slides. It has to be https, and it freezes once the note is verified.
- New
Rejections became a conversation
v0.6.0 · Aug 22, 2026
- New
A rejected note can be fixed instead of re-uploaded: replace the file, reply to the moderator in the note's thread, then resubmit it.
- Improved
The thread on an unverified note is private to its author and moderators, and both sides get a notification when the other replies.
- New
Report a problem from inside the app
v0.5.0 · Aug 22, 2026
- New
Bugs, improvements and ideas can be filed at /feedback, with a screenshot you can paste straight in. A moderator's reply is shown back on your own report.
- Improved
Reporting works while an account is still waiting for approval — someone who cannot get in is exactly the person who needs to say so.
- New
Works offline, installs like an app
v0.4.0 · Aug 22, 2026
- New
Notes you have opened stay readable with no connection, and there is a page that says so rather than a browser error.
- New
A notification when a note of yours is verified.
- Improved
Signing out clears the notes cached on the device — this is a shared-laptop app.
- New
Profiles and approval
v0.3.0 · Aug 22, 2026
- New
Accounts carry a name, year and current semester, with an avatar you can upload and an account you can delete yourself.
- New
New accounts wait for a moderator to approve them, and moderators have a queue for it.
- Improved
Every byline shows a name instead of an email address, and browse starts on your own semester.
- New
Activity
v0.2.0 · Aug 22, 2026
- New
“Recently viewed” on your account page, activity totals on the dashboard, and a full trail for super admins.
- Improved
A failed request now shows a reference you can quote — it is the exact key into that trail.
- New
First release
v0.1.0 · Aug 20, 2026
- New
Browse notes by paper, semester, date and keyword; upload your own; open one and comment on it.
- New
Subjects come from the USIC&T MCA syllabus, so the library cannot fragment into two spellings of the same paper.
- New
Moderators verify or reject what is uploaded, and super admins manage accounts.
- New
An installed copy updates itself the next time you open it, so this page is the version you are running.
